W: Oh, I’m sorry. What did you just say?

Passage One
Our planet is home to about seven billion people. Since the 1990s, population experts have predicted the number would grow to 9 billion before it begins to slow down and possibly decrease. But a new report predicts the world's population is likely to increase to almost 11 billion by 2100.
During the rest of this century, Africa is likely to experience the largest increase in population. The report says Africa's population will grow from about 3.5 billion to 5.1 billion people over the next 85 years. The researchers believe the population of Asia will reach five billion by 2050. That is up from the current 4.4 billion.
The researchers also believe that North America, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean area will have a total population of below one billion. John Wilmoth says the pressure of feeding the rising population is likely to be less than what might be expected.
"The relatively good news is that the world has been winning the race between population growth and food production. If you look back historically over the last 50 years, certainly for the world as a whole and for many, most individual countries and regions, the increase in food production has outpaced the increase of population."

Passage Two
In the United States today, there are two major parties―the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Each political party is made up of members who share goals and ideas. Each party wants its goals and ideas to direct the actions of the government. Parties nominate, or choose, people that they want in office. The nominated people are called candidates. Political parties select candidates to represent them in elections. Each party then works to get its candidates elected. Nominating candidates is the major job of a party. But it is not the only thing that a party does. At national conventions, party members from every state gather together. They make up a platform. A platform is a statement of goals. The goals may be general or specific. For example, a general goal may be having better schools. A more specific goal may be raising teachers’ salaries. The platform creates unity for the party. It tells voters what the party stands for. A party must also do fund-raising. Fund-raising is a group of activities designed to bring in money. The party uses some of the money to pay for its day-to-day operation. But most of the money is spent on getting the party’s candidates elected.

Passage Three
To get a driver's license, you must take a series of tests. The first test is the vision test. This test checks your eyes to see if you have to wear glasses when you drive. The second test is a written test that checks your knowledge of highway and traffic regulations. You can prepare for this test by studying a booklet that you can get at the driver's license office. After you pass the written test, you receive an instruction permit. This permit allows you to practise driving with an experienced driver. The last test you have to take is a road test. This checks your driving ability. If you pass it, you will receive your driver's license.
When you go to the driver's license office to take the road test, you must provide your own vehicle. First, the license examiner checks the mechanical condition of your car. Then, the examiner gets into the car with you and asks you to drive in regular traffic. While you are driving, the examiner tests you for such things as starting, stopping, turning, backing up, and parking. If you can't control the car properly, or if you violate a traffic regulation while you are taking the test, you fail the examination. You will have to practice driving more until you take the road test again and pass it.
Questions 17-20 are based on the passage you have just heard.
17. What does the second test check?
18. What does the instruction permit allow you to do?
19. What do we learn about the third test?
20. Who are the most probable audience of the talk?
Section C
You probably know the scenario (情景). The office clock says noon and the guys and gals (女孩) decide where to go for lunch. In many towns, the drive time to a (21)restaurant eats up most of the lunch hour, not to (22)mention the gas. It's hard to find lunch for less than ten dollars plus (23)tip. You swallow down your food, share a few laughs with your co-workers, and rush back to the office (24)wishing you had time for a nap.As you walk to your desk, you notice this guy putting away his brown bag. He (25)appears calm, happy, and ready to get back to work, some of (26)which he did while eating his lunch. He's thinking how (27)delicious it was, how much money he saved, and the hassle (烦扰) avoided. Is it worth it to prepare and bring your lunch to work each day? Well, (28)looking at some basic examples, let's say the cost to fix your own lunch is about $3 a day. (29)It's probably much cheaper. That's $15 for a five-day week. Eating out at approximately $10 a day comes to $50 for the week. You saved at least $35 not including drive time and gas. That's (30)more than 1,800 dollars ($1800) a year saved. Interested?
