Section B

Passage One

In the past, messengers often carried letters from place to place. In Europe, howeverit was not until the 15th century that regular systems of taking letters between towns were started. The messengers traveled on the horse back, and fresh horses were always kept ready at different places along the main roads where the messengers stopped. Each of these stops was known as a post and today we still keep the name "post office".

In the old days, such postal deliveries were only for important people and messengers would sometimes carried letters for ordinary citizens, but the cost was very high and the messengers were often careless. And so in the 17th century in Britain, a service was started for everyone. At first the postal service carried letters only between a few very busy towns, but year after year it grew larger and better.

Today, there are post offices in every country. Letters can be sent by post for delivery in almost any village, anywhere. The post office uses many ways to carry mail — by train and ship and by airplane, depending on the fastest and easiest way.

In 1970,when I was named president of the Ford Motor Company, I dont know which of us was more excited.

Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their feelings and their love not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would never hug(拥抱) their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity. Nothing could have felt more natural.

Section C

People enjoy taking trips. But what are the reasons they leave home? One reason is for (21)education. People travel because they want to broaden their horizons, to learn about other people and other places. They are (22)curious about other cultures. When people are tourists, they get a (23)quick look at different ways of living. Even a short look at another kind of lifestyle is an important (24)lesson. On a trip, a person can learn directly by visiting museums and historic spots. What does a tourist learn when he sees the art museums, visits the historic places and other scenic spots in Paris and shops along the River Seine? He gets a (25)vivid picture, a real life of the French people. He learns about their (26)attitudes: how they feel about business, (27)beauty, and history. What about the tourist who goes to Hong Kong? Does he get the same information (28)that he could get from a book? He might read that Hong Kong is crowded, that there is less than 200 square meters of space for each person, but (29)seeing and feeling the lack of space will impress him much more. He might read that there are nearly 200 vehicles for every kilometer of roadway, but the sight of so many vehicles parked along the roadside (30)will be a much more vivid lesson. The tourist to Hong Kong will never forget the contrasts: the straight, vertical lines of the tall modern buildings and the moving lines of boats that people live in.
